Guruvayur

Guruvayur, the abode of Lord Guruvayurappan, is located 29 Kms North-West of Thrissur, the cultural capital of God’s own country,Kerala. Guruvayur is all about the presiding deity, Lord Sri Krishna. Many legends attribute historical and mythological significance to the temple and its god. Yet, none can do full justice, since, one has to witness in his own person the magnificence of the lord of the temple.

The idol worshipped here is believed to be more than 5000 years old, coming down from ages handed down the divine order, finally to be installed, consecrated and worshipped in the present temple, which in itself is an ancient temple, known for its architectural design and sculptural beauty.

Places to visit around Guruvayur

Mammiyyoor Mahadeva Temple – 2 Kms, a must see pilgrim point. It is believed that pilgrimage to Guruvayur is complete only upon having a darshan of Lord Shiva of Mammiyyor.

Punnathur Kotta – 3 Kms, a sanctuary of all elephants gifted by devotees to Lord Guruvayurappan. One gets to see how the elephants are cared for and attended to love attention and devotion. Presently, there are about 64 elephants in this sanctuary.

Chavakkad Beach – 5 Kms,One of the serene and undisturbed beaches of Kerala.

Thiruvambadi Krishna Temple - Thrissur, 23 Kms, one of the ancient temples of Lord Krishna. The world famous Thrissur Puram commences and ends at this temple.

The Sreekovil will be closed. On the day of Special Illuminations called "Vilakku" the Thripuka is performed after that. The Sreekovil will be closed after Thripuka. Then the Krishnanattam, a colourful traditional dance-drama on Lord Krishna's life is enacted inside the Temple on specified days.
